Options for Preventing Foreclosure

Anyone who owns a home fears foreclosure — especially in today’s economy. However, by utilizing the proper resources, you can stop foreclosures from happening to you and threatening your family’s stability.

First, it’s imperative to understand the complex laws and guidelines governing foreclosure. Someone that may get you the appropriate foreclosure information is your lender. Not only will your lender help you understand foreclosure laws, he or she can also work with you to salvage your home. If you are overwhelmed with financial burden, your lender will present viable options to meet your specific financial needs, which may include settlement programs, loans or other methods of foreclosure assistance.

Your lender may even offer debt counseling as a solution to your problem. Debt counseling monitors your entire outstanding debt, and offers options for restructuring it. A repayment plan is then cultivated to gradually bring you back to financial freedom. You can also request foreclosure loans if applicable, or have your existing loan modified. This will, of course, be at the discretion of your lenders, but could truly alleviate the burden you are facing. Another option to help you stop foreclosure is forbearance. Forbearance will temporarily postpone your mortgage payments. It can also reduce the amount of monthly payments, or extend the period in which to make them.

If your situation cannot be resolved with these options, selling your home is another solution. You can settle delinquent debts, pay mortgage balances and avoid foreclosure with the funds of the sale. You may also try a short sale negotiation with your lender. This will facilitate the time needed to sell your home, while making sure you and your loved ones are secure and properly reimbursed. If all else fails, signing your home over to the lender or filing for bankruptcy are other venues.

With so many routes to be taken in an attempt to avoid foreclosure, knowing what’s best for you is going to require a deep knowledge of the issue at hand. Learning how to stop foreclosure is something that can be done through various online resources and the use of a trustworthy lender.
